Program notes
Four Miniatures for Flute and B♭ Clarinet (1981) was written in the spring of the composer’s freshman year at Indiana University. Even though these pieces were composed more than twenty years ago, they already show elements that have remained central in his music: a South American flavor that infiltrates the lines, and rhythm as a unifying component throughout.
All four movements make extensive use of imitation between the instruments. The first and third are the shorter miniatures in the set, while the second seeks to evoke an intimate and spiritual mood. The last movement is bright and sparkling, built on groupings of three against two—a metric interplay that has become a recurrent feature in Amaya’s work.
— Efraín Amaya
